ABOUT SELF DEFENSE
IF I TAKE A SELF DEFENSE
COURSE, I WILL KEEP MYSELF SAFE.
FALSE- taking self
defense is great but just the course will not keep you
safe. The most important self
defense is common sense. Second, the techniques
you are shown are not always applicable to real life and can get you
hurt because
they do not work.
I WILL IMPROVE MY SELF ESTEEM
WITH SELF DEFENSE LESSONS.
FALSE- self defense
alone will not make you feel better about yourself, however,
succeeding at something, like self defense lessons
will. Taking a class to make
yourself feel safe and good about yourself is the
wrong reason. Taking a self
defense class for the sake of staying safe is the
right reason. You must practice
the moves. If you feel good
just because you sat through an hour of class, this
will get you hurt. DO NOT WALK
AWAY WITH FALSE SECURITY BECAUSE SOMEONE TOLD
YOU YOUR NEW KNOWLEDGE WILL MAKE YOU INVINCIBLE.
MY BOYFRIEND IS A JERK, I WILL
TAKE A SELF DEFENSE CLASS SO I
CAN HURT HIM AND TEACH HIM A LESSON AND HE WILL
TREAT ME BETTER.
FALSE – self defense
is to help you in times of peril, not to pick fights
or get even.
I SAT THROUGH A SELF DEFENSE CLASS
AND FEEL THAT I CAN ADEQUATELY
DEFEND MYSELF FROM MOST ANY THREAT.
FALSE – just because
you sat through a class does not mean you have the
skill or experience to handle any situation. First you must ensure that the knowledge
and methods covered were correct and applicable to
real life and second you must practice for a long time before you can
hope
to utilize any of this knowledge.
THE SELF DEFENSE INSTRUCTOR WAS REALLY
IMPRESSIVE BOTH PHYSICALLY AND
VERBALLY. HE MUST REALLY KNOW
WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT.
FALSE- remember self
defense and martial arts in general today are big business. If you pay money you want to walk away feeling you
received a good value for your
money. Instructors give
techniques that seem to work. They tell you
interesting stories and “sell” you a package of self worth, ego, and
high expectations. They must make you walk away
totally satisfied.
The truth is not always easy to accept. They do not tell you that it takes
many years to be affective in battle. They
do not scare you with the facts such
as if you try a technique and it fails, you may lose
your life.
I LEARNED HOW TO BREAK SOMEONE’S
KNEE WITH A QUICK AND EASY
KICK MOVE.
WE ALSO LEARNED HOW TO DRIVE SOMEONE’S NOSE
BONE INTO THEIR BRAIN AND KILL THEM.
IF SOMEONE MESSES WITH ME, IT ONLY TAKES A FEW
POUNDS OF PRESSURE TO DISABLE THEM, OR KILL THEM IF I WANT TO.
FALSE-
this is the most dangerous
of all the propaganda spread by the self defense
experts. It’s very difficult
for trained fighters to break someone’s knee, it is
nearly impossible due to anatomy to drive a nose bone into the brain,
and it most definitely takes more than a few pounds of
pressure to break someone’s bones. This type of
hype only gives the participant a false sense of security and will prove
fatal if tried. It encourages escalation of the
threat instead of defusing it. It attacks your
ego and makes you look for a fight so you can try out your new power.

When
looking for good
self defense, first ask the instructor how much real
life experience he has. They
usually say they train to fight so they don’t have to
and list all the awards and certificates they have. That’s
all fine and well but when it comes down to your life , don’t you want
to defend yourself
with something that has been proven rather than what
someone who has never used tell you will work? Use
your common sense to sort through the sales pitch and see what they have
to gain by telling
you what they are trying to sell you.
A good instructor will tailor
moves to the individual and not make the whole class,
regardless of shape, size, or power do the same thing. Lastly,
don’t forget about the law. Many techniques
these weekend warriors are pushing will get into court
and into jail quicker than you would think. Remember
the law only allows enough force to be used to stop the threat.
Once the threat is over you cannot proceed to
hurt the attacker. Remember,
the law states that you must choose to run from
trouble first, only after you have exhausted all possible egress can you
defend
yourself. You must be able to
convince the judge or jury, or at least the
officer that you were in “immediate danger of great
bodily harm, disfigurement, or death”. The
country has become so lazy that everyone wants to do everything and have
everything
but they are not willing to put the work in to
accomplish their goals. If
you are serious about self defense and the defense of
your loved ones, you must be willing to make the commitment and practice
“real” techniques. You must be
willing to accept that you may suffer
losses in the battle and you may be permanently
injured or handicapped. The key
is to accept this but train to greatly improve your
chances of avoiding it. Crimes
such as rape and spouse abuse do not just affect you
for the moment, they affect you for your entire life. The
mental damage is eternal in most cases. Training
can greatly increase your chances of coming through such
an incident victoriously or if you are a victim, you will be able to
deal with it and get on with your life.
Before
enrolling in
a self defense class, ask yourself a few questions.
*am I
willing to practice
what I am taught?
*do I
have the mental
fortitude to carry out what I am practicing?
*what
is my level of
physical conditioning?
*what
is my mental health
like?
*if I
did hurt someone,
how would I feel after the incident?
*would
I be able to
hurt someone without feeling guilty?
*would
I freeze if I
had to defend myself?
*what
is my character,
a fighter, submissive, quarrelsome, stubborn,
troublemaker?
*are
the techniques
being offered right for me?’
*can I
easily understand
why I need self defense?
*do I
just want to be
a bully or truly desire a means to defend myself?
*can I
accept the consequences
for my actions?
Don’t
put the
alarm system in after you have been robbed.
Don’t
get insurance
after the accident.
